Description:

 Throughout the month of May 2006, Portage la Prairie School Division students had the opportunity to tour the Artsmarts exhibition with docent Gabriele Neuschwander and participate in a tile workshop. The objective of the workshop was to focus on community and have each student create a 6-inch tile to be part of a bigger picture.

Approximately 800 ceramic tiles were prepared for the project by Sandi Storen and Gabriele Neuschwander. The overall design of the 50 foot long mural is a prairie landscape created by Sandi. The two artists pre-painted the tiles in base colours of blue, white, yellow, green and brown representing sky, clouds, canola field, grass and road. The lesson was created by artist/teacher Melissa Hart Gladue and delivered by 7 local artists in the Arts Centre studio to 42 groups consisting of over 800 students (K to 9). In order to create their tile, the students identified and painted images that told something about their community and that were important to them.
